“SORE” NOTES, MODERN ARTIST ON ART
Modern Artists on Art
Ten Unabridged Essays, Edited by Robert L. Herbert
Primary Meanings*by Allen Leepa
“An effort to deal as directly as possible with the nature of experience and it’s perception through visual reactions.
Goals:
1. State point blankly.
2. Keen ability to theorize and willingness to carry experimentation to it’s logical conclusion - in the search of new meanings.
Larger Goals:
1. Clarity of an Idea
2. Precision of Means
3. Standarization of Elements
4. Impersonality of a Statement
Language is the symbolic representation of experiences. Words restrict experiences while ideas develop and organize them.
Understanding is not a private awareness of an image that is later applied; [understanding] gives it it’s key. An image cannot determine it’s own application. The more abstraction, the less there is reference to actual events and the chance of *valid testing.
*Testing in reference to a viewer’s perception - natural reactions.
Modern Artists -> Attempt to avoid the escalation of abstraction by dealing with the nature of preceptions directly. (pg. 204)
Attempt to consider only essential factors of one’s perception to produce clarity.
Ex. Scale produces heroic sensations (depersonlized) - tall buildings, waterfalls, etc.

Simplicity - in all forms, creates a higher chance of relatability, and natural reaction. Decluttering the art / concept presented allows clarity - what is being seen + what is being experienced.
